As for the news regarding ‘Hunger Games’ sequel, Ross has issued an statement saying that as a writer and a director, he simply does not have the time he needs to write and prep the movie he would have wanted to make. This is because of the fixed and tight production schedule.
However, whatever be the statement the media is rife with rumors that the director and "Hunger Games" studio Lionsgate were at odds over salary demands for "Catching Fire. Though it is hard to find out the truth but Ross has said there were no hard feelings in this.
It is reported that he has said that he loved making 'The Hunger Games' and it was the happiest experience of his professional life. He even thanked Lionsgate for being supportive of his in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise and that they empowered him to make the film he wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results.
Denying that there were any problems regarding negotiations with Lionsgate, he said that they have understood him through this difficult decision. So, it seems that that the reports that Ross is a filmmaker who does not repeats himself seems to be more true. A blog had said that they were told that Ross did not have the burning desire to spend another couple of years with Katniss in the Capitol.
On the other hand Lionsgate said in a statement that they were very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct 'Catching Fire and they were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and they were grateful for his work and hope to work with Ross again in the future. As for "Catching Fire," the search for a new director will start immediately. The replacement is needed soon as production on the will start in August.
